Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 51 (i).] In a steam boiler in which water flows downwards through a number of superposed tubular rings embedded in a block of cast iron or other metal 78 surrounding the combustion chamber, air for combustion is supplied through an annular passage around the fuel hopper 2 and charging tube 3 under the control of a valve 7 operated by the pressure of mercury or other vapour in a coiled tube 31 in the cast metal block. A second valve 49 on the spindle of the valve 7 and opening before the valve 7 when the furnace temperature falls, allows air to pass through the casing 51 to the grate 10.
