Fire-bridges; air supply, regulating. - For consuming smoke in steam-boiler furnaces, a deep mass of clinker or other refractory material f is placed on fire-bars d arranged at the same level as the ordinary fire-bars b so as to fill in the space between the two fire-bridges c, c. Air is admitted from the ash-pit to the refractory material through a door g<1> operated by hand or by the furnace door. The furnace door is connected by a link s to the slide valve of a steam cylinder p, the piston of which is connected by a chain q to the door g<1>. so that, when the furnace door is opened, the slide valve admits steam to the cylinder so as to operate the piston to open the door g<1>. When the furnace door is closed, steam is shut off from the cylinder p and the door g<1> closes under the influence of its own weight and the weight t. The exhaust-pipe of the cylinder may be provided with a throttle valve to control the closing of the door g<1>.
