UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JAMES SLADE, OF YON KERS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC FIRE-GOVERNORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,790, dated August 4, 1874; application filed May 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES SLADE, of Yonk ers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Fire Governor, of which the following is a specification:
To regulate the movements of the exhauster in gas-works automatically, I propose to employ a common gas-pressure governor, connected with the outlet of the hydraulic main, and also connected with the dampers of the boiler fire, which runs the engines to work the exhausters, whereby, when the engine does not exhaust as fast as the gas is produced, the pressure hein g left on the retorts, will be communicated to the governor, causing it to rise, thus openin g the damper in chimney and under the fire, thus putting on all the draft until the required steam for running the exhauster is obtained, when the pressure being no longer on the drum it will descend, thus closing all draft to and from the fire, and preventing it from getting more steam till required.
The drawing is a side elevation of a common gas-pressure regulator, a furnace, and a boiler for generating steam to run the engine for working the exhausters, showing the mode of employing the governors for regulating the fires of the boilers for making steam to run the exhausters by controlling the dampers;
A represents the tank, and B the drum. The drum is suspended from a lever, G, which is connected by a chain, D, with a damper, E, of the furnace F, and also with another damper, G, by an arm, H, so that, when it rises by an increase of pressure in the governor, it will open the dampers, causing the fires to burn up and make steam faster, thus accelerating'the speed of theexhausters, and, when the pressure is removed, the drum will lower and close the dampers, thus checking the fires, preventing the engines from running faster than is required to take the quantity of gas making, the said engine being worked by the steam generated by the furnace F, and the governor bein g connected with the outlet of the hydraulic main of the gas-manufacturing apparatus.
By this plan the fires under the boiler are directly influenced by the amount of gas making at any time, whether it be much or little, thus saving fuel and the labor of all attendance, except to supply the fire with fuel when required, which no other apparatus will do.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the gas-retort A, having rising and falling drum B, the furnace having door E and damper G, and the lever 0, having chains and strap H, as shown and described, so that the draft in the furnace will always be regulated by the pressure of gas in the drum.
JAMES SLADE.
