Specifica'tion'of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 30, 1914. Serial No. 869,463.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN A. MCFERRAN and MILTON L. MCFERRAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson andState of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Regulators and Smoke- Purifiers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to draft regulators and smoke purifiers'for steam boilers, and one ofv the principal objects of the invention is to increase the combustion of the fuel with a view to eliminating the smoke and ,economizing in the use of the fuel.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple, reliable and eflicient means for utilizing all the heat units of the fuel by introducing hot air or oxygen over the firebed to mingle with the hot gases liberated from the burning fuel and to thus aid the combustion and eliminate the smoke.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illus trated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is an elevation of the end of a locomotive boiler and showing the fire door open, Fig. 2 is a front end elevation of the boiler, Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the spring actuated rod for operating the intake valves, Fig. 4 is a detail view of the weighted lever connected to the fire-door for operating the regulator, and said bar being connected by chains to the spring actuated rod, shown in Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is atop plan view of the firebrick wall over the grate bars, and showing the hot-air pipes broken away, Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical section taken through the front end of the boiler and through the smoke box, Fig. 7 is a sectional view showing one of the intake or butterfly valves, Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the regulator with the cover removed, Fig. 9 is a vertical sectional view of the same, Fig. 10 is a fragmentary side elevation showing a modified form of the invention, and Fig. 11 is a front end elevation of the boiler.
The invention is shown in connection with a locomotive boiler, but it will be understood that the invention may be applied to any form of boiler, whether stationary head provided with ahinged fire-door 3.

Four intake pipes are connectedto the bells 4 and these pipes curve around the inside of the smoke box 9, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and as indicated by the. reference numerals 8, 10, 12 and,13, said pipes being connected to a cross pipe 14, and the pipes 15 communicate with said cross pipe 14. The pipes 15 are provided with nipples 17 which extend into the. brick arch 16.v
A sliding rod 19, mounted in brackets 20 r at the front of the boiler is provided with" an encircling spring 21 secured at one end to said 'rod and at the other end bearing against one of the brackets 20 and said rod is connected to the crank 22 attached to the valve stems 7 A bell crank lever 23 pivoted at 24 is provided with a slot 25 through which a pin-26 extends, said pin projecting from the rod 19. Connected to one arm of the bell crank lever 23 ischain 27, said chain extending to a lever 28 connected to the fire-door 3, said lever .28 being mounted to slide in hooks 29 andprovided with a ball or weight 30 at its outer end. The lever 28 is provided with an inclined portion 31 on which the door 3 rides when it is open to tilt the lever 28, said lever being provided with a squared opening-for,
receiving the squared projection 32 on the main shaft 33 of the regulator about to be described.
The regulator comprises a casing 34 in which is mounted-the shaft 33 and said shaft carries a gear wheel 35, which meshes with a pinion 36 on a shaft 37. Mounted on the shaft 37 is a gear 38fwhich meshes V with a pinion 39 on the escapement shaft 40.

The hook 29 is formed on a rod 45 which is connected to a bell crank lever 46 pivoted at 47, said bell crank lever having a rod 48 connected thereto, and said rod extending through the blower valve 49. The valve L9 is mounted on a pipe connection 50, which communicates with a pipe 51 leading to a blower 52 disposed immediately under the intake end of the smoke stack 11. A foot lever 53 connected to the rod 45 and pivoted at 54:, is provided with a pedal 55 which may be operated by the engineer independent of,
the opening of the fire door 3.
When the door 3 is opened the rod 28 is thrown upward at the weighted end 30 which slackens the chain 27 thus permitting the chain -21 to slide the rod 19 and open all the valves 5 to permit the air to enter the smoke boX and be heated to a high degree before it is discharged through the pipes and through the nipples 17 into the fire-box. After the door 3 has been closed, the regulator serves tov holdthe lever 28 from immediately dropping to its initial position owing to the action of the pendulum and the escapement. After the valves 5 have been closed, there is a restricted opening through the port 6 for a constant supply of air to the fire-box. It will be understood that the engineer can place his foot upon the pedal 55 at any time and open the valve whether the tire-idoorr3 is open or not.
In the modification shown in Figs. 10 and 11, the invention is shown applied by dispensing with the brick arch and showing the connections made on small engines which have the steam jet system, thus reducing the cost of the application of this invention. The intake bells 4: are connected to the pipe 56 which leads to a header 57 in the smoke box and thence leading to the radiator pipe 58 which discharges into the fire-door opening at 59.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that hot air and oxygen is fed over the fuel at the required times and in such quantities as will insure a complete combustion of the fuel and thus eliminate smoke.
Various changes may be made in the de tails of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
The invention may be applied to any form of boiler without material change in the different parts.
What is claimed is z- 1. A draft regulator and smoke eliminator comprising a series of intake pipes, valves in said pipes, said pipes leading into the smoke boX and from thence through into the fire-box, and means for discharging the heated air and oxygen over the fire grate, a fire door, and connections between said firedoor and the intake valves to open the latter when the fire-door is opened and a regulator to prevent the valves from being closed immediately when the fire-door is closed.
2. A draft regulator and smoke purifier comprising air inlet pipes, valves in said pipes, a spring actuated rod for controlling said valves, said intake pipes leading through a smoke box, a brick bridge in the fire-box, said pipes discharging through said brick bridge, a fire-door, connections between said fire-door and said spring actuated rod for opening the valves when the door of the firebox is open, a regulator comprising a clock movement for preventing the intake valves from closing suddenly and a. force draft blower for increasing the draftthrough the smoke stack. I
3. A draft regulator and smoke purifier comprising air inlet pipes, valves in said pipes, said pipes leading through a smoke box, a bridge in the fire-box, said pipes discharging through said bridge, a fire-door, and connections between said fire-door and said valves, a clock movement for preventing the valves from closing suddenly, and a force draft blower for increasing the draft through the smoke stack.
