Abstract
White coatings are produced on aluminium or aluminium alloy articles by forming an adherent oxide coating on the metal surface and then, without the application of external electrical energy, removing the coloured constituents of the coating by treatment with a suitable reagent. The oxide coating may be produced either chemically, for example by treatment with a solution containing an alkali metal carbonate and a soluble dichromate, or anodically in an electrolyte of sulphuric or oxalic acid. The reagent for removing the coloured constituents of the coating may be a solution of sulphuric acid, nitric acid, a mixture of sulphuric and nitric acids, or hydrofluoric acid, the latter being preferred in the treatment of anodically produced coatings. Details of the concentration, temperature, &c. of the coating solutions and of the acid solutions used for the whitening treatment are given in the Specification.
