Abstract
A process for coating the surface of slats, concrete or brickwork consists in applying a sol prepared from iron hydroxide or chromium hydroxide, or a mixture of these sols, drying the sol to form a film on the surface, applying thereto an electrolyte to convert the sol into a gel, and drying the gel. A modification of the process consists in applying to the surface a coating of concentrated acid, a concentrated alkali solution or other electrolyte in solution, which solution reacts upon the surface to form a coagulant film, drying the coating, applying the sol to the treated surface, and drying. In this case, gel formation commences on the underneath surface of the sol film, though a solution of an electroylte may be applied to the outer surface also of the sol film, to expedite the complete conversion of the sol into a gel. Specified electrolytes are ammonium sulphate, potassium ferrocyanide and sodium silicate. Various colour effects may be obtained by adding to the sols, substances such as red oxide of iron, green oxide of chromium, black oxide of manganese, smalt or ochre.
