Abstract
Coloured materials for coating surfaces such as those of slates, tiles, glass, porcelain, concrete, or brickwork, are made by preparing sols from hydroxide of iron or hydroxide of chromium, or both, and incorporating therewith inorganic powders serving as colouring matters without acting as electrolytes or having any adverse effect upon the sols. The inorganic powders, such as red oxide of iron, green oxide of chromium, black oxide of manganese, ochre or smalt, may be incorporated with the liquid sol and the mixture, if desired, dried, or they may be mixed with the already dried sol. For application, the mixture is stirred with water, and, after application, the sol may be gelled by applying an electrolyte, such as sodium silicate solution, as described in Specification 424,919.
