Abstract

A cement powder is manufactured by mixing solid converted hydrous readily soluble silicates defined in the parent Specification with substances capable of binding the silicic acid of the soluble silicate to produce insoluble silicates. Examples of such substances are metallic oxides or metallic silicates such as barium silicate fused alumina cement, barium monoxide or calcium aluminium silicates but not aluminium oxide or hydroxide. Filling agents such as quartz, sand, chamatte, asbestos, barium sulphate, silicon carbide, &c. may be added. The cements may be mixed with water or water-glass solution, and used to manufacture artificial stones, tubes, plates, vessels, &c. The articles so made may subsequently be burnt. In a typical specific example 300 parts of pulverized potassium silicate containing at least 20 per cent of water are mixed with 100 parts barium silicate and 600 parts of pulverized quartz and sand. This mix is then made into a paste with water and is very stable to sulphuric acid.
