Abstract
393,805. Moulding flexible brush backs; vulcanizing-moulds. WESSEL, W., 112, Hindenburgstrasse, Remscheid, Germany. Sept. 2,1932, No. 24504. [Classes. 70 and 87 (ii).] Flexible brush backs are formed from an elastic material, such as rubber, the holes for the reception of the tufts or bristles being produced during the moulding of the back. The mould comprises an upper part 1 and a lower part 2 carrying studs 3 for forming the holes in the brush back. The studs 4 at the periphery are disposed somewhat obliquely while those in the centre are vertical' and they abut against the top 1 when the mould is closed. In a modification the studs are reduced at their upper ends 9. When it is desired to secure the bristles by wires, grooves for the reception of the wires are formed in the brush back by ribs 10 on the top mould part which may be either broader or narrower than the studs 3 and may be arranged in circles or zig-zag form. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the studs 11, 12 are carried by a plunger 13 which is slidable in the mould part 2 and retained by a screw 14 so that the studs can be withdrawn from the moulded brush back before the mould is opened. The mould parts are brought into register by pins 6 engaging holes 7 and the mould is first filled with pieces of rubber and then heated to soften the rubber and finally vulcanize it. The brush back may have an ornamental design formed on it or may be provided with an additional backing.
