Abstract

In a shoe having a sole which is formed and connected to the upper and insole by injection moulding, the outer sole (17) (Fig. 3, not shown) is formed of a material, part or all of which is foamed, and an edge strip 18 of firm homogenous unfoamed elastic material is injection-moulded on to the upper and outsole to extend around the sole and connecting it to the upper. A last (11) with the upper (12) and insole (15) thereon is arranged on a mould with the bottom plunger (10) raised (Fig. 1), and the edge strip (18) formed by injection moulding. A middle sole (16) of felt &c. may be assembled within the margin of the insole to limit the dimension of the edge strip, or the latter may be moulded integrally with a middle sole. Plunger (10) is then lowered (Fig. 2) and the outsole material, including an inflating medium, is injected through channel (21). After a short time, to allow an abrasion resistant layer (22) to form, the plunger is lowered further (Fig. 3) when the outer sole becomes foamed. Alternatively after formation of the edge strip (Fig. 1) the plunger is fully lowered (Fig. 3) and outsole material which is already foamed is injected. Preferably the outer sole protrudes beyond the lower edge of the edge strip.
