Abstract
1,049,481. Boots &c. G. JONES and R. G. LUCAS. July 17, 1963 [April 19, 1962], No. 15253/62. Heading A3B. A shoe is made by applying a combined shank stiffener and heel filler 15 to the bottom of a lasted upper 10 and then moulding a sole and heel 16 directly on to the bottom of the shoe. The combined shank stiffener and heel filler 15 comprises a thin portion 15a and an enlarged portion 15b and is recessed (Fig. 2, not shown) leaving a margin 23 which provides a seal with the upper to prevent the ingress of the moulding material of the sole. A central rib 21 projects above the level of the margin 23 by an amount corresponding to the thickness of the lasting margin so that it will contact the shoe insole. Holes (not shown) may be provided in the central rib to allow the mouldable sole material to pass through the holes and to adhere to the shoe bottom. The combined stiffener and filler 15 may be injection moulded from a hard heat-resistant plastics material. The sole is moulded from a thermoplastic material e.g. polyvinyl chloride or rubber by compression or injection moulding.
