Abstract

1,126,513. Boots &c. LOUIS STEITZ & CO. 25 April, 1967 [30 April, 1966; 3 Nov., 1966; 15 Feb., 1967], No. 18983/67. Heading A3B. [Also in Division B5] A shoe having a cushion sole has a prefabricated outer sole 10 or half sole and a cushion 11 which are secured to the shoe upper 13 or insole 14 by an edge strip 20 which is injection moulded, the cushion 11 being sealed off from the edge strip 20 so that the injected material does not contact the cushion 11. In a first embodiment (Fig. 1) the outer sole 10 e.g. of rubber is provided with a sealing lip 30 which is pressed, together with the cushion 11, against the shoe bottom by the bottom plunger 16 of an injection mould 12. The mould 12 has a two part side frame 17 with sealing lips 18 and is provided with injection passages 23, 23a, 24 and 25. The sole 10 may be provided with holes or may be smaller than the bottom plunger 16 to allow entry of the injected material e.g. plastics or rubber, to form the strip 20. The sole 10 may be prefabricated in a compression mould using the same bottom plunger 16 or may be produced in a separate compression or injection mould. In the case of a shoe having a half sole the injected material 20 is used to form the heel and shank of the shoe. In a second embodiment (not shown) the cushion 11 is sealed off from the injected material by a separate sealing ring which may be adhered to the shoe bottom or the sole. The sealing ring may be cut from a tube having the appropriate cross-section or may be injection moulded directly to the shoe bottom In a third embodiment (Fig. 12) the cushion 11 is sealed off by the downtumed edge of the lasting margin 45a, the lasting margin being held in this position by a reinforcing strip 48 of triangular cross section.
