Abstract

414,789. Moulding synthetic resins. COLE, Ltd., E. K., and HAHN, E., Ekco Works, Priory Crescent, Southend-on-Sea. Feb. 21, 1933, No. 5249. [Class 87 (ii).] An article of synthetic resin having one or more inlays is moulded by applying heat and pressure so as to produce a partlypolymerized body of one synthetic resin having in its surface one or more openings or recesses corresponding to the inlays and then introducing a second synthetic resin into the openings or recesses and again applying heat and pressure so as to complete polymerization of both the body and the inlays and to unite them together. The moulding may be effected in a die 9 having one or more relatively movable members 10, 11 which are adjusted to produce the openings during the first pressing operation with a die-member 14 and are then withdrawn to provide spaces for the second moulding material which forms the inlays. The resins used may have different rates of polymerization so that the second resin is completely polymerized in the time required to finish polymerization of the partly-polymerized first resin. The material used for the inlays may be of several different colours. The inlay may be a central portion within an outer annulus, or an intermediate annulus within a central portion and an outer annulus, and the space for the inlay may then be formed by an ejecting plunger or a relatively movable annular tool in a lower die member. The openings formed by the members 10, 11 may be connected by further openings so that, in the case of dies having parallel sides, the second material may fill all the openings as the member 14 moves down. The inlays may extend beyond the surface of the surrounding body and thus appear as overlays or form a backing for the body. Specification 390,609 is referred to.
