Abstract

Chlorosulphonic acid and sulphur dioxide are obtained by causing sulphur and chlorine, or a sulphur chloride if necessary in the presence of chlorine, to act upon a mixture of sulphuric acid and sulphur trioxide. The reaction may proceed under raised pressure and liquid chlorine may be employed. The crystallization of pyrosulphuric acid may be prevented by controlling the initial temperature or adding some chlorsulphonic acid to the initial mixture of sulphuric acid and sulphur trioxide. According to one example sulphur mono-chloride and chlorine are introduced into a stirred vessel containing a mixture of chlorosulphonic acid and fuming sulphuric acid the temperature being kept at 20 DEG C. At the end of the reaction the sulphur dioxide is expelled by heating and the chlorosulphonic acid may be distilled. In another example sulphur and chlorine are employed. Sulphur di-chloride or tetrachloride may also be used.
