Abstract

392,818. Change-speed gearing; oneway clutches. JOUAN, F., 80, Rue St. Lazare, Paris. Oct..13, 1932, No. 28596. Convention date, Oct. 13, 1931. [Class 80 (ii).] In change-speed gearing for vehicles comprising aligned driving and driven shafts 2, 4, Fig. 1, and a parallel countershaft 3 which drives a gear 14 loose on the shaft 4, there is housed within the gear 14 a one-way clutch 62 which overruns on direct drive as well as on other speeds. The countershaft forward drives are effected by clutching loose gears 23, 24, 25 alternatively to the shaft 2 by dog clutches 36, 37, 38 respectively. To effect the direct drive, a dog clutch 39 splined on the shaft 2 is engaged with recesses 11 on the face of the gear 14, which is thus driven in direct drive as well as in countershaft drives. Between theinside of the gear 14 and a hub 10 fast on the shaft 4 is a one-way roller clutch 62 adapted to be locked by sliding a dog sleeve 40 splined on a sleeve 16 of the gear 14 into engagement with dogs 42 fast on the shaft 4. In changing speed, the accelerator is released, whereupon the shaft 2 slows down and the shaft 4 is automatically disengaged from the gearing. The one-way clutch 62 is engaged by an auxiliary one-way clutch 61. The main grip rollers 62, Fig. 2, are in slots 60, Fig. 8, in a cage 57 having an end flange with recesses 58 in which are balls 61. When the drive picks up, the balls 61 first jam, and, by means of the cage 57, carry the main rollers 62 of the clutch into gripping position. A modification is described in which on direct drive the toothed gearing is at rest. In this form the dog clutch 39, instead of engaging the toothed gear 14, engages a ring member 75, Fig. 5, within it which surrounds the one-way clutch 62 and is adapted to be unclutched from the gear 14 as the dogs 39 engage that gear.
