Abstract
390,827. Carbonizing fuel briquettes ; charging and discharging. GAS LIGHT & COKE CO. and SIDERFIN, N. E., Horscferry Road, London. Oct. 10, 1931, Nos. 28217/31 and 15229/32. [Classes 51 (ii), 55 (i), and 55 (ii).] Fuel briquettes are carbonized rapidly in a narrow vertical retort, being first heated to about 600‹ C. to ensure the conversion of the surface layer into hard coke before being passed down into the lower part of the retort when carbonization is completed at 1100‹ to 1300‹ C. The width of the retort may be six inches and the rate of carbonization is such that the temperature of the charge rises to 950‹ C. in the course of 2 to 3 hours. The composition of the briquettes may be 90 parts of coke breeze and 10 parts of pitch, or blended coals may be used, or mixtures of coke breeze non- coking coal and pitch, and in an example, the mixture may be non- coking coal 70 per cent, Durham 20 per cent, and pitch 10 per cent. Other examples of blends refer to mixtures of non-coking coal and pitch, or to the use of semi-coke in place of non-coking coal. The charge in the narrow externally heated retort a rests on a grooved roller c and pivoted bars d, rotation of the roller causing discharge of the coked briquettes. The hopper e is provided with heavy bars f which are reciprocated by eccentrics h on a shaft turned by a hand wheel l. Undue retardation of the bars f is an indication that the feed has been checked. Steam may be admitted at the lower part of the retort.
