[Class 4.] The supporting plane of an aeroplane has openings through which extend semicircular screens 14 partially enclosing two rotary propellers, with fixed blades 12, on axes parallel to a tractor screw F, the lower half of each casing being capable of being telescoped angularly into the upper part to vary the relative thrust on the two sides of the machine. The blades 12 of the rotary propellers may be set helically to give a forward as well as an upward thrust, and the proportion of forward to upward thrust may be varied by adjustable louvres at the rear ends of the casings. Additional screw propellers may be mounted on extensions of the rotary propeller shafts.
