Abstract
548,407. Aircraft wings. WINCH, J. H. June 18, 1941, Nos. 7688 and 12849. [Class 4] An aeroplane wing is varied in area and, depth of camber without altering the depth of camber of the under surface. The wing comprises a front spar a connected to a series of ribs each comprising upper and lower pairs of channel members b connected by two vertical parallel plates. Hinged to pivots g on brackets c<SP>1</SP> is a Y-shaped member h having its rear end connected to a strap t surrounding an eccentric j on a shaft p mounted in bearings in the rib plates. Pivoted at m to the member h is one end of a member k supported at its rear end on. a strap t<SP>1</SP> surrounding another eccentric j<SP>1</SP> on a shaft p<SP>1</SP>. A third member l is pivoted at m<SP>1</SP> to the.member k and its rear end is connected to a slotted member engaging the flange of an I-section tail piece n. A shaft e is carried in bearings supported by brackets c bridging the space between the rib plates. This shaft can be rotated by a shaft p<SP>2</SP> through bevel gear s, s<SP>1</SP> and drives the two shafts p, p<SP>1</SP> through the worm-gear shown. The rear end of the shaft e has a screw engaging a screwed sleeve f connected to the tail piece n which has a slot movable over a cross-piece o on the rib. As the shaft e is turned the eccentrics raise the members h, k, l to increase the camber and simultaneously the tail piece n is moved rearwardly to increase the area of the wing.
