Abstract
360,275. Aircraft. MUSS, W., 34, Deitersen, Kreis Einbeck, Hanover, Germany. Jan. 16, 1931, No. 1547. [Class 4.] An aircraft having an engine 18, propeller 15 and lifting-screw 17 at its front end has three planes on each side of the body which are transversely arched and tiltable about transverse shafts 2, 3, 4, each successive plane' being of greater chord than the preceding one, while an engine and propeller 11, 13, 12, 14 are provided below or in front of each of the foremost planes. The body is of the section shown in Fig. 1, the inner edges of the planes continuing the lower sides 28. The lifting-screw 17 is inclined as shown and driven from the engine 18. A similar lifting-screw 29 may be mounted at the rear end and driven from an engine which also drives a propeller 32 which is used, when the propeller 15 is stopped, to drive the machine rearwardly. Additional engines and propellers 24, 26 may be mounted beneath or behind the rear planes and transversely arranged propellers 30 also may be provided. The propellers 13, 14, 26 may be arranged obliquely to the direction of flight and driven from a single engine. The shafts 2, 3, 4 are turnable simultaneously by the pilot to tilt the side planes. The side planes may be flat instead of arched.
