Abstract

593,032. Aircraft. WARNER, D. K. Dec. 8, 1944, No. 24617. [Class 4] A lifting member of an aircraft, either fuselage or wing, has the lateral extremities of rounded, thickened form and projecting downwardly below the member, an engine being mounted in each extremity and driving a propeller located immediately in front of the leading edge of the member, the direction of rotation being such that the blades move upwardly where they pass in front of the member and downwardly beyond the extremities. As shown in Fig. 1, propellers 16. are mounted at the rounded and thickened forward extremities 1b, 1c of the fuselage which is designed as a lifting member, the propellers being rotated in opposite directions so that their blades move upwardly in front of the leading edge 1a. The main wings 5 are mounted at the tail of the fuselage and carry fin and rudder assemblies 6 at the tips. Adjustable auxiliary aerofoils 23 are mounted in front of the leading edges of the wings. 5, and stub wings 7 provided with ailerons are located near the front end of the fuselage. Slots 4 are formed in the upper. surface of the fuselage, through which air is ejected rearwardly, and a jet is directed downwardly and rearwardly through a slot 3 at the forward end of the fuselage. The aircraft may be provided with an open pressure chamber enabling it to skim over land or water, as described in Specification 592,756. Fig. 2 shows a construction in which the propellers 16 are.carried at the ends of a wing 17 mounted above the main planes 5 at the tail of the fuselage. The ends 6 -of the planes 5 are curved upwardly to follow the tip circles of the propellers. According to a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the central spanwise portion of the wing 17 comprises two separate aerofoil members, the forward one of which has a chord of about onefifth, that of the .rear member, and is set at a smaller incidence. Six propellers may be carried in pairs by three wings such as 17, one mounted over the tail of the fuselage, and the others near the tips of the main planes 5, Fig. 4 (not shown).
