[Class 4] An aeroplane having a low aspect ratio wing of the general shape shown is provided aft of the maximum span with stabilizing vanes 48, 50 which extend laterally beyond the axes of the vortices trailing from the edges of the wing into the upwash of air incident thereto. The plane, which is symmetrical in longitudinal section has ailerons 34, 36, an elevator 38, fins 40, 42 and rudders 44, 46. Two forwardly projecting propellers 30, 32 are driven from engines within the wing so as to rotate in opposite directions with their outboard tips moving downwardly. The elevator 38 may be extended laterally to form the trailing portions of the vanes 48, 50 or the vanes may be provided with hinged rear portions to act as ailerons in conjunction with or instead of the ailerons 34, 36. Alternatively, the vanes may be tiltable as a whole in the same or opposite directions about a transverse axis. In another form, the forward portion 56, Fig. 5, of the vane may be tiltable about a transverse axis to act as an elevator, a rear flap 60 being pivoted to it and adjustable independently to act as an aileron. For this purpose the part 56 is mounted on a tubular shaft 58 through which extends a shaft 62 having an arm 64 linked to a horn 68 on the flap 60. The forward portions 56 may be given a limited differential movement for adjusting the lateral trim of the aircraft.
