[Class 126.] A firebrick or like grate bottom, shown as applied to a fire at hearth level, is formed of a front member 12, and blocks 11 to the rear of it, air inlets 14 in the member 12 communicating with passages 19 in the blocks 11, from which outlets 20 deliver the air to the fuel. In the form shown, the member 12 is a block extending along the front of three rear blocks 11. A chamber 17 is formed at each end of it, to which air passes through apertures 14 in a grid at hearth level. From each chamber 17, the air passes to a passage 18, formed half in the rear face of the block 12 and half in the front faces of the blocks 11, the passage 18 leading to the passages 19. The passages 19 are formed in halves, one at the meeting faces of the central and outer blocks 11, and one at the meeting faces of the outer block 11 and the side 15 of the fire back, the latter communicating with a further passage 22 formed half in the rear faces of the blocks 11 and half in the back 16. The outlets 20, 23 leading from the outer passages 19 and the passage 22 are formed in part in the fire back. Ashes collect in spaces 24 formed under the air passages, and are collected by lifting out the blocks. Ribs 21 are formed on the blocks 11 between the air openings 20. In modifications, the grate bottom is above hearth level, and the front member is formed by a metal or faience fret.
