Abstract

539,529. Furnace doors. METCALFE, H. April 29, 1940, No. 7608. [Class 51 (i)] In furnace doors of the kind provided with an air-heating chamber having a tortuous passage for the air to be heated, the opposed sides of the passages 3, Fig. 2, are provided with fins 6 running in the direction of the air flow. The air enters the chamber at 4 and leaves at 5. The fins on one side of the passage may be offset relative to the fins on the opposite side. As shown in Fig. 4, the longitudinal fins 17 alternate with grooves 18. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the fins 19 and grooves 20 are offset relative to the fins and grooves on an opposed wall of the passage. The inner surface of the walls of the chamber may :be undulating as shown at 24, Fig. 6, and the partition walls 25 may be corrugated. In further modifications the walls of the passages are provided with projections or recesses of various forms.
