Abstract

381,581. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Prince, D. C. ; 1424, Wendell Avenue, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) June 24, 1931, No. 18278. Convention date, June 26, 1930. [Class 39 (i).] The envelope consists of a main chamber connected with h a n auxiliary chamber by a constricted orifice, a heated electrode being arranged in the auxiliary chamber which contains a vapouryielding material and is heated to such a temperature that the material vaporizes; the vapour condenses in the main chamber and returns to the auxiliary chamber. The cathode consists of a shell 12 with a re-entrant part having an internal heater 13, and is mounted in a chamber 10 lined with alumina, magnesia or quartz 11 and connected by a constriction 21 with the main chamber 1. Mercury or alkali metal is contained in the cathode. In a modification, the cathode is mounted in an auxiliary chamber depending from the main glass container and a sloping metal plate provided with an orifice is disposed between the cathode and the auxiliary chamber.
