Abstract
378,126. Electric discharge tubes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Wantz, E. N. ; 320, North Harvey Avenue, Oak Park, Illinois, U.S.A.) May 26, 1931, No. 15397. Convention date, May 24, 1930. [Class 39 (i).] A R÷ntgen-ray or other vacuum discharge tube is provided with a cathode structure adapted to be assembled as a whole separate from the glass seals therefor and to be mounted on the glass pinch which is then sealed into the tube. For this purpose the cathode structure comprises a supporting member 22, a focusing member 19 a filament 18, a supporting conduit 31 for the filament, and conductors 28, 29 connected electrically to the filament, and the member 22 is adapted to engage the pinch seal 25 and is provided with spaced arms 23 for supporting the member 19 and with means for supporting the conduit 31. The focusing member 19 comprises a hemispherical portion 21 integral with or secured to a recessed cylindrical portion 20 which is secured, as by spot welding, to the arms 23 of the member 22. The other end of the member 22 is in the form of a cylinder 24 split as shown at 26, 27 to enable it to grip the pinch seal 25, and the arms 23 are formed with arc-shaped projecting portions 39 engaging semicylindrical insulators 43 for gripping the conduit 31 when the portions 39 are drawn together by screws 42. The conductors 28, 29 pass through the pinch seal and are connected, as by welding, to the conduit 31 and the member 22 respectively, the inner end of the filament 18 being connected to the conduit 31 and the outer end to the support 22. The tube is energized from a source 55, Fig. 1, through an autotransformer 52, the anode 12 being connected to the secondary 46 of a high-tension transformer of which the primary 47 is connected at one end to an adjustable contact 51 on the autotransformer and at the other end through an ammeter 49 to the secondary 46. The cathode is connected across a portion of the autotransformer through an adjustable, resistance 61.
