[Class 137.] In a ventilating installation intended more particularly for railway vehicles, comprising a fresh air intake, an air treatment chamber and control means adapted to cut off the normal flow of air from the intake, through the treatment chamber to the enclosure, that part of the installation between the intake and the control means is adapted to be self-clearing of smoke or the like. In the form shown in Fig. 1, fresh air is drawn by a fan a through a louvre b, past a light-sensitive detector of smoke l, m and a filter f and passed through a heating chamber c to a duct g leading to the enclosure. In the event of smoke being drawn into the intake, as when a railway vehicle is passing through a tunnel, the light-sensitive device actuates a control damper j to cut off the duct g and pass the heated air directly back to the outer atmosphere by way of a duct h. In a modification, the chamber c and duct g are provided with a byepass so that - a mixture of heated and cool air may be supplied to the enclosure. In another modification, Fig. 4, the control means is disposed between the intake and the fan so that when the supply of fresh air is cut off, air is withdrawn from the enclosure by way of a duct n and recirculated. The air intake is rendered selfclearing by being divided to form two inlets b<1>, b<2> facing in different directions. When the damper is in the recirculation position, air from outside flows in at one inlet and out at the other. The chamber c may contain instead of a heating, a cooling, humidifying or drying means.
