[Class 3 (ii).] In an illuminated sign, light directed towards the sign from one or more elongated sources of light is dispersed substantially uniformly over an area substantially that of the sign and is diffused in all directions so that the sign is illuminated uniformly. In the form shown a translucent or transparent glass plate 6 is arranged between a sign A and an elongated electric lamp bulb 2 of substantially the height of the sign, the plate having one surface 7 formed with ribs parallel to the bulb 2 and the other surface 8 beaded, mottled or stippled. The beads may be spherical and in substantially uniform contact with each other. The positions of the surfaces 7, 8 may be reversed, they may be on separate plates, and the sign A may be placed between the bulb 2 and the plate 6. The sign may be viewed directly, by reflection from an inclined reflecting surface, or the light may be distributed uniformly over an inclined surface having highly reflecting characters on a light-absorbing ground.
