Abstract
366,769. Auxiliary propelling-apparatus for moving aircraft on ground. VICKERS (AVIATION), Ltd., Byfleet Road, Weybridge, Surrey. March 14, 1931, No. 7953. [Class 103 (ii).] To facilitate the moving of heavy aeroplanes across the ground, each landing-wheel 3 or certain of them has applied thereto a manually operated and readily detachable propelling device, preferably comprising a fluted roller 9, adapted to contact with and to rotate the wheel. As shown the roller 9 is revolubly mounted between a pair of spaced arms 7 forming a carrier that is pivoted at 6 to a strut 5, while an adjustable tension rod 12 extends between the carrier and the wheel axle to maintain the necessary pressure between the roller 9 and the wheel tyre. The shaft 10 of the roller is rotated either directly by a crank 11 or indirectly through suitable gearing, and the carrier is further steadied by an additional tangentially extending rod 14. In place of the tension rod 12, a compression device in the form of a toggle, one or both arms of which may be adjustable in length, may be employed.
