[Class 130.] To average the tobacco in a tobacco-feeding machine, the tobacco, after leaving the carding mechanism, is distributed by an arrangement of conveyer drums arranged in series. Tobacco fed by a belt 10 to a carding drum 13 is dressed by a drum 16 and removed by a picker roller 21 adjacent which is a comb. The tobacco removed by the picker roller is distributed in a housing having stages arranged one above another so as to reduce the door space. A roller 24 distributes the tobacco over a drum 27 from which it is removed by a picker roller 29, and projected on to a roller 24<a>, and the process is repeated until the tobacco is finally deposited on a web 31 of cigarette paper. The advancing faces of the vanes 136 of the rollers 24 are flat and radial while the rear faces 38 are arcuate. These rollers may also serve to winnow the tobacco so that dust and undesirable portions are rejected. In a modified construction, the tobacco is distributed on to the conveyer drums directly by the picker rollers, which perform the winnowing and distributing actions of the rollers 24.
