Abstract

365,351. Universal joints. LESSER, H., 4, K÷nigstrasse, Eichwalde, near Berlin. Feb. 6, 1931, No. 3861. [Class 80 (ii).] A universal joint comprises several wire rope lengths f stretched between the ends of shaft elements a, band having their ends secured, as by soldering, in sleeves e mounted resilientlv or otherwise in blocks d rigidly secured, as by bolts c, to the shaft elements. The sleeves e may carry tensioning nuts g as shown in Fig. 1, or they may screw directly into the blocks. Alternatively the inner end of the sleeve may rest on a shoulder in the block d, a rubber or leather washer being interposed to increase the flexibility of the joint. The shoulder is slotted to receive the wire rope f. In a modification of this form, the aperture in the block d is enlarged at its outer end to receive a nut carried by the sleeve e, a rubber ring being interposed between this nut and an inner shoulder in the block. The resilient mount may comprise a split expansible conical metal ring s, Fig. 6, between a sleeve r on the wire rope and an aperture in the block. A lubricant-retaining cover v is provided. As shown in Fig. 1, the longitudinal axes of the wire ropes f do not intersect but they may be caused to do so by juxtaposition of the apertures in the blocks d.
