Abstract
530,303. Driving belts. BIRKETT, L. June 8, 1939, No. 24628/38. [Class 80 (i)] Power transmission belting comprises a hollow core formed of a helix 1 of spring wire, the outer surfaces of which are intimately bonded by vulcanizing or cementing to the interior surface of a hollow sheath of rubber 2, so that the wire cannot stretch more than the rubber sheath. The ends may be united by a coil of wire 3 adapted to be screwed into the ends of the core. In a modification, Fig. 2, the rubber may be stripped back and a short piece of rubber-covered coil 5 screwed over the ends 3. The joint may be wrapped round (1) by a sleeve of rubber secured by metal bands or clips or (2) by a flexible wire coil. In a further modification, Fig. 8, flat belts 9 .. 11, having the hollow core as above, are arranged side by side, the joints 12 .. 14 being staggered and covered by wrappings 15.
