Abstract
211,636. Cann, J. W. Dec. 19, 1922. Driving ropes.-A flexible endless driving band, for use with plain-grooved or positive-driving pulleys or on endless-track vehicles, comprises a wire rope distended at intervals by spreader members having peripheral grooves or notches in which the individual strands are seated, the wire rope! being covered wholly or partially with rubber vulcanized in position. As shown, a wire rope of three strands a, b, c, is distended at intervals bv metal discs d with equally spaced peripheral notches e for the reception of the strands which, when in position, may be secured by closing the mouths of the notches, and by soldering. In forming an endless rope or band, the ends of the strands are joined individuelly in different positions, preferably equidistantly spaced, in the length of the band, a special spreader member provided with separate notches for the two ends being inserted at each joint. The rubber covering comprises an inner layer f vulcanized under pressure to penetrate the interstices and spaces between the strands and an outer layer g vulcanized to softer consistency. The rubber covering may be confined to the parts of the wire rope enlarged by the spreader members or it may be continuous, following the contour of the rope or so arranged that the driving band is externally cylindrical throughout its length. When used on an endless track vehicle, the hard enlargements of the core are intended to grip the ground as well as the driving pulleys.
