[Class 39 (i).] The area on which the focal spot is formed is on the end surface of a substantially cylindrical anode and is subdivided into smaller fields by incisions or grooves in the surface only of the anode to reduce strains due to heating. In an anticathode having a tungsten active face and a copper backing, the incisions extend through the tungsten into the copper and the walls of the incisions are pressed into contact. Incisions 3 at rightangles may be formed as shown in a rotatable anticathode with a tungsten ring 2.
