Abstract
362,318. Bag &c. fastenings. RETSKIN, H., 101, West 112th Street, New York, U.S.A. May 5, 1931, No. 13220. [Class 44.] In a safety fastening for bags, portmanteaux, &c., of the kind comprising a pivoted member b with a depending claw 4 which passes through registering openings in the overlapping frame members (not shown) of the closed bag, the member b has a loop 3 through which a fastening strap surrounding the bag in the usual way may be passed, and by which member b may be manipulated. The device comprises a box-like base a with lugs 1 by which it may be attached to one of the frame members by clinching &c., and with an internal abutment 1a for one end of a bow spring 2, the other end of which engages in a corner 10 at the base of clasp 4. This spring passes over a dead-centre when member b is raised or depressed and throws member b to each of its extreme positions with a snap action, upward movement of member b being limited by the engagement of the shouldered end 5 of the claw with the under surface of member a. Member b is pivoted to member a by a bifurcated hook 6 straddling a lug 1 and engaging under the edge of member a, the hooks being maintained in engagement by the spring 2.
