[Class 43.] A buckle for straps 9 or the like comprises a frame 1 having a tongue 2 displaceable by a yoke 3 sliding on the frame to cause the free edge of the tongue, which extends substantially across the width of the frame, to coact with a cross-bar 14 to grip the strap. The frame comprises side members 4, 5, and cross-bars forming upper and lower slots. The tongue may be of spring material and be integral with a cross-bar or it may be pivoted to the frame. The free end of the tongue may carry teeth disposed at an angle to the plane of the frame. Tie yoke may be moved by a flap 8 and prevented from slipping off the frame by an inturned edge 15 engaging a cross-bar or a recess :in the bar. The tongue may carry a convex bead 12 to engage the yoke to lock it in clamping position, or one or more recesses in the tongue may be engaged by the edge 15 or by raised points on the yoke. For garter suspenders, the strap 9 may be passed through an upper slot, then beneath the tongue and up between its free edge and the bar and thence down and round a garter element and up again, being finally secured to a lower bar 10. The garter element may be directly secured to the bar 10 or to a lug thereon.
