[Class 42 (i).] Shrinking.-A fabric, which previously may have been subjected to a known shrinking, dyeing, calendering, &c. operation, first has its components rendered plastic, e.g. by moistening, then is positively contracted lengthwise, and finally set in its contracted state, e.g. by drying. As shown in Fig. 2, the fabric moistened by water jets &c. 10 is laid on a thick travelling band 5 between which and an inextensible band of metal &c. 25 it is pressed and shrunk while passing round the roller 27. The roller 27 is heated to fix the shrunk cloth. Moisture may be drawn off through the holes 16 in the bed. A heater 28 may be provided above the band 25. As shown in Fig. 11, the cloth is engaged by the stretched outer face of the band 5 and contracted when the band is bent oppositely against the part 64 of the heated bed 63, or the fabric may be crinkled by rollers 41, 42, Fig. 6, or by a doctor knife 62, Fig. 7, before being pressed and fixed between the bands 51, 25.
