868,458. Producing patterns on fabrics. UNITED MERCHANTS & MANUFACTURERS Inc. Oct. 27, 1958 [Sept. 9, 1958], No. 34293/58. Class 100(2) A method of producing a design on fabric comprises stamping the fabric by passing it in a moistened condition through the nip formed by a heated engraved roller rotating in unison and co-acting with a plain-surfaced roller which has not been "run in". The fabric 21 e.g. cotton, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, nylon, "Dacron" (Registered Trade Mark) and other natural or man-made fibre fabrics, is damped with water so that it has a moisture content ranging from 5 % to 15 % and is then passed between an engraved steel embossing roller 18 and a smooth surfaced counter roller 19. The roller 19 is formed of compressed paper, wool, cotton or a composition of cotton and wool and has a smooth, undeformed outer surface since it has not been "run in" in contact with the roller 18. The roller 18 is heated to a temperature of from 360‹F. to 450 ‹F. and bears on the counter roller with a pressure of from 50 1b. per square inch to 525 lb. per square inch. Shallow depressions are formed in the fabric 21 by the relief design on the roller 18. After passing between the rollers the fabric exhibits a visually discernible design owing to the high gloss of the stamped portions contrasted with the rough surface of the unstamped part. If the fabric is then dyed the stamped design will show up as a pale shade against a darker ground, Fig. 2, owing to the smaller affinity of the stamped portions to the dye.
