Abstract

545,277. Stretching fabrics transversely. BULLEN, S. C. April 25, 1941, No. 5341. [Class 100 (i)] Woven fabrics are brought while in a wet state into contact with the surface of a rotating rubber cylinder A, the length of any particular strip of which is gradually increased so that the fabric is stretched laterally over the whole of its width. The rubber cylinder A is mounted upon a roller B fixed to a shaft C upon which are also arranged collars D engaging the ends of the cylinder A. The collars D are mounted upon spherical sleeves e, and levers F are mounted upon adjacent sleeves e<SP>1</SP>, so that when the levers are actuated by a screwed shaft and hand wheel, the collars D are inclined to the axis of the shaft C and the rubber cylinder is distorted. The surface of the rubber cylinder may be plain or may be formedwith protuberances, or alternatively may be perforated, so that 'when corresponding perforations are provided in the roller B suction can be supplied to the fabric to hold it against the cylinder. The cylinder may be replaced by a circumferentially arranged series of longitudinally extending strips.
