Abstract

In the storage of fertilizers which are hygroscopic or have a tendency to cake a protective layer or coating impermeable to moisture is produced on the exposed surface of the mass of fertilizer to be stored in bulk. The layer or coating may comprise cellulose esters or ethers, drying oils, waxes, natural or artificial resins, caoutchouc, or synthetic polymerization products of diolefines. In the case of urea a resinous film may be obtained by applying an acid solution of formaldehyde. In examples, a fertilizer comprising ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate is sprayed with linseed oil varnish to which may be added colophony, waxes, or ferric chloride; urea is sprayed with a lacquer of the kind used for painting steam radiators, or with a solution of a urea-formaldehyde resin; calcium nitrate is covered with finely-ground diatomaceous earth and then sprayed with a caoutchouc solution; a fertilizer comprising ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphate, and potassium chloride is covered with a thin layer of sand and then sprayed with a suspension of calcium carbonate in linseed oil; and a fertilizer comprising ammonium nitrate and calcium carbonate is sprayed directly with a suspension of calcium carbonate in linseed oil.ALSO:In the storage of urea, a protective layer or coating impermeable to moisture is produced on the exposed surface of the mass of urea to be stored in bulk.
