Abstract

Granular fertilizers are surface coated with an anticorrosive additive comprising a water-soluble condensed phosphate other than a cyclic trimeta- or tetrametaphosphate and which is derived from acids of the formula H4P2O7, H5-P3O10 and (HPO3) x, the coating being caused to adhere to the granules by means of an oil or other similar viscous material, e.g. aqueous solutions of gelatin, or sodium aliginate. Suitable additives are derived from an acid of formula H4P2O7 by replacing any proportion of the hydrogen ions with alkali metal or ammonium ions. The additives, which should be present in the proportion of at least 0,25% by weight of the fertilizer, may be applied to the granules in various ways, for example a hydrocarbon oil of viscosity 30,000 Redwood No. 2 seconds at 70 DEG F. and 179 Redwood No. 2 seconds at 200 DEG F. is heated to 180 DEG F. and sprayed on to the granules, whereafter tetra sodium pyrophosphate is added as a dust. Using this process, a suitable proportion of oil is from 0,1% to 0,5% by weight of the fertilizer. Alternatively, the tetra sodium pyrophosphate may be sprayed with a similar oil, and this material subsequently mixed with the fertilizer granules. Specification 822,145 is referrred to.
