Abstract

The resistance to caking of granular fertilizing-salts such as sodium, calcium, or ammonium nitrate, or superphosphate is improved by agitating with the granules a preferably small quantity of dry powdered non-caking substance, e.g. 0,5-3,0 per cent of the weight of the granules, in the absence of binding agents and for a sufficient period of time to produce a smooth coating of non-caking substance on the surface of the granules. The non-caking substance may be rock phosphate, calcium carbonate, talc, asbestos or graphite. Coloured granules may be produced by using a coloured non-caking substance such as red iron oxide or by mixing a coloured material, e.g. ultramarine with the non-caking substance. If the granular fertilizers contain one or more non-caking constituents the non-caking substance applied as a coating may comprise one or more of the constituents, e.g. finely powdered chalk may be used to coat granules containing ammonium nitrate and calcium carbonate.ALSO:The resistance to caking of granular fertilizers is improved by agitating with the granules a preferably small quantity of dry powdered non-caking substance, e.g. 0,5-3,0 per cent of the weight of the granules, in the absence of binding agents and for a sufficient period of time to produce a smooth coating of non-caking substance on the surface of the granules.
