Abstract
A mixed fertilizer comprises a soft earthy crude phosphate, a potassium salt and a nitrogen compound which releases a mineral acid in the presence of nitrifying bacteria in the soil, the nitrogen content being up to 5 per cent. by weight of the fertilizer and the ratio by weight N:P2O5 being up to 0,5, preferably up to 0,3. The particle size of the mixture is preferably 0,2-1 mm. Two examples are given, the nitrogen compounds being respectively ammonium sulphate nitrate and ammonium sulphate and the potassium salt, potassium sulphate. The phosphates are referred to as Kouri phosphate and "hyperphosphate" respectively. Other nitrogen compounds suitable are ammonium nitrate, ammonium chloride, sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate. Experiments are described showing the advantage of using initially a fertilizer according to the invention which incorporates the nitrogen compound releasing a mineral acid which in turn solubilizes the phosphate, over the initial use of fertilizers without such a compound, followed at a later date by its separate addition.
