Abstract
A fertilizer is made by mixing ground basic slag, e.g. Thomas phosphate slag, with up to 10% of its weight of a water-soluble crystalline salt, wetting the mixture, granulating and drying in a gas containing sufficient carbon dioxide to react with the lime present in the slag to form calcium carbonate, which binds the particles together within the grains. The salt may be a potassium salt or rock salt. The granules may be dried in gas at at least 100 DEG C. and obtained by burning blast-furnace gas, producer gas, coke-oven gas or natural gas.
