Abstract

An insoluble resin useful as a fertilizer is prepared by reacting, under acid conditions, an aqueous condensate from 1 mol of urea with 1,2-3,5 mols of formaldehyde, with sufficient urea to bring the proportions up to 1,2 - 1,8 mols. of urea per mol. of formaldehyde. The acid conditions may be produced by any of the usual acid or latent acid catalysts for ureaformaldehyde resins, e.g. sulphuric acid or ammonium chloride. The condensation may take place in presence of other fertilizers, e.g. ammonium sulphate, or superphosphate and this other fertilizer may provide the necessary acidity. In the example 2,2 mols of formaldehyde (as formalin) were refluxed with 1 mol urea at a pH of 7,5 for 15 minutes. The pH was adjusted to 4,0 with formic acid and refluxing continued. The pH was then re-adjusted to 7,5 with caustic soda and the solution concentrated in vacuo to 70% solids. Further urea and ammonium sulphate were added and the mixture heated. The precipitate after powdering and drying was a fertilizer suitable for lawns or fairways.ALSO:A fertilizer is produced by reacting under acid condition an aqueous condensate from 1 mol. of urea and 1,2-3,5 mols of formaldehyde, with sufficient urea to bring the total proportion to 1,2 to 1,8 mols. of urea per mol. of formaldehyde. The condensation may take place in the presence of other fertilizers, e.g. ammonium sulphate, superphosphate, some of which, e.g. ammonium sulphate may provide the necessary acidity for the condensation.
