Abstract

1304718 Urea-formaldehyde condensates VERENIGDE KUNSTMESTFABRIEKEN MEKOG ALBATROS NV 14 May 1970 [16 May 1969] 23517/70 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C1 and C3] A urea-formaldehyde condensate suitable for use as a fertilizer is prepared by forming a liquid containing urea, formaldehyde and ammonia, entirely or in part condensed with each other, and 3-8 wt. per cent of water, wherein the molar ratio of urea : formaldehyde overall is 2:1 to 1:1, and 5-70% of the formaldehyde is condensed with ammonia as hexamethylene tetramine and any formaldehyde not in condensed form is present as paraformaldehyde, and acidifying the liquid. The mixture may be granulated during the hardening following acidification. In examples, powdered urea and paraformaldehyde are mixed in 5:3 or 5:4 molar ratio and 2À3-4À4 wt. per cent of dry gaseous ammonia is introduced. The resultant liquids are acidified with concentrated H 3 PO 4 or HNO 3 and granulated.
