359,130. Consuming smoke. WOOD, G. R., 25, Eastby Road, Bradford, Yorkshire, and DODWELL, A. E., 54, Rectory Road, Barnes, London. Sept. 4, 1930, No. 26383. [Class 51 (i).] Apparatus for consuming smoke in boiler furnaces comprises an annular chamber 3 arranged in the furnace flue 1 behind the firebridge 2 and adapted to deliver air or a mixture of air and steam tangentially to the stream of gases passing through the central aperture of the chamber prior to impinging upon incandescent surfaces provided by a pillar or pillars 9. The chamber 3 is preferably divided by a partition 4 into front and rear compartments 5, 6 supplied separately with air from tubes 10 which may be provided with steam injectors. The air from the compartment 5 enters the flue through apertures 7 while that from the compartment 6 enters through tangential apertures 8. Air may be supplied to the pillar 9 and delivered through perforations therein in which case the initial supply of air through the apertures 7 may be dispensed with. Instead of the pillar 9 a perforated hollow cone may be employed. The surfaces of the annular chamber and pillars or cone may be provided with protuberances.
