Abstract
331,183. Wheeler, A. J. Feb. 19, 1929. Liquid, gaseous, and pulverulent fuel furnaces.-A stream of fuel is burnt by applying to the stream at a point near its entrance into the combustion chamber a transverse supplementary flame having a higher temperature than that of the main stream at that point, so that the flame enters the stream and causes the fuel to burn more rapidly. The invention is described as applied to boiler furnaces of the type covered by Specifications 227,156, [Class 123 (ii), Steam generators], 227,498, and 255,718. As shown in Fig. 2, the main burners 7 are arranged along the front of the furnace and supplementary burners 8 project flames of higher temperature into each stream. Only sufficient air to burn the inflammable part of the fuel is admitted to the supplementary burners, the rest of the air necessary being admitted to the main burners and along the path of the flame through openings in the water-tube wall 5. An additional small nozzle 12 may supply air or fuel or both adapted to deflect the main stream towards the front wall. The main burner 7 may be pivoted at 13, Fig. 3, and extend through a slot 14 in the crown 4, a flange 15 on the burner closing the slot, so that the direction of the flame can be adjusted. Reference has been direcfed by the Comptroller to Specifications 235,489 and 255,610.
