Air, supplying; baffles.-In a steam boiler furnace, air for combustion is forced by steam jets through pipes H, Fig. 1, traversing the flue A to the space behind the grate B where they are bent into the form of stirrups L, the forward branches of which rest on the rear deadplate C and are provided with perforations M delivering intersecting streams of air over the fire. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the pipes H are continued from the stirrups L beneath the grate and terminate in perforated vertical sections mounted on the front deadplate C. In a further modification, shown in Fig. 4, the air supply pipes H pass from the front of the ash-pit to the rear where they are bent upwardly and then pass forwardly over the fire terminating in perforated vertical sections mounted on the deadplate. A perforated screen D of the kind described in Specification 262,883 is arranged at the rear of the grate. Such screen, however, may be provided with two separate nests of tubes.
