A further object of the invention is to locate a plurality of perforated steam distributing pipes beneath the grate adjacent its forward end, the perforations in said pipe being located at a suitable point off the vertical center of the pipes in order that the steam jets will be projected upwardly and rearwardly or in the same general direction as the draught to reduce the possibility of cinders and the like entering the perforations which would obstruct the free passage of the steam, and further to locate an air distributing pipe at the rear end of the grate, particularly back of and below the bridge wall, said air distributing pipe having perforations located off the vertical center of said pipe to reduce the likelihood of foreign substances entering said perforations.
With these ends in View, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.

Above the combustion chamber is located the boiler 8 having the return tubes 9 passing therethrough and communicating with the smoke stack 10.
A steam supply pipe 11 leads from the source of steam supply, preferably on the outside of the furnace, to a point below the grate 3 where it is connected with a valve 12 and from this valve leads a steam feed pipe 13 which underlies the grate 3, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. Projecting transversely of the grate from the feed pipe 13 are a number of parallel steam distributing pipes 141: having perforations 15 therein which are off the vertical centers of the pipes and inclined upwardly so as to project jets of live steam in an upward and rearward direction from the ash pit through the grate into the combustion chamber in the same direction generally as the draught.
At the rear of the grate, and preferably back of and below the upper edge of the bridge wall so as not to be directly in the path of travel of the draught is located an air distributing pipe 16 so that like the steam distributing pipes this air distributing pipe is arranged crosswise of the boiler. This air distributing pipe leads from any desir able point outside of the boiler so that relatively cool air may be drawn into it and if found desirable the outer open end may be located outside of the building. The inner end of this air distributing pipe, or that portion within the furnace, has perforations 17 formed therein to one or both sides of the vertical center above the horizontal center so that jets of relatively cool air will be projected into the products of combustion as they pass over the bridge wall. The air passing through this air distributing pipe is governed by a valve or damper 18 as of the butterfly type.
It has been found by actual experience that the live steam projected into the tire bed from the ash pit will accelerate the draught and the combustion action and the steam impinging on the grate tends to keep this relatively cool and actually prevents the formation of clinkers and cinders from adhering to the grate while the mixing of the relatively cool air with the products of combustion as they pass over the bridge wall forms a highly combustible gas which is immediately flashed so that practically everything given off from the fuel is consumed, thereby producing an exceedingly high temperature and practically eliminating all smoke especially to such an extent that it cannot be discerned with the naked eye.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is The combination with a furnace including a grate so as to provide an ash pit and a combustion chamber, and a bridge wall at the rear of said grate, of a steam supply pipe leading from a source of steam supply to a point below the grate, a valve connected with said supply pipe to a point below the grate, a feed pipe connected with said valve and underlying the grate, a plurality of distributing pipes connected with the feed pipe and lying crosswise of the furnace within the ash pit below the. forward end of the grate, said distributing pipes having perforations therein to one side of the vertical centers above the horizontal centers whereby jets of live steam will be projected in the same general direction as the furnace draught through the grate, in combination with an air distributing pipe entering the furnace from the outside and located on the bridge wall crosswise of the furnace, said air distributing pipe having perforations therein off the vertical center and above the horizontal center of said pipe for projecting jets of air into the space above the bridge wall where said air will be mixed with the products of combustion thrown off from a fire in the combustion chamber, which products of combustion have been previously mixed with the steam, and a valve to control the passage of air through the air distributing pipe.
