[Class 75 (i).] A mixture of coal dust and air, oil or gas is discharged into the burner from an annular chamber 5 through a slot or slots 6 in the form of a transverse curtain which is carried forward by a whirling stream of air or air and gas, introduced behind the curtain through openings 10 in an annular supply pipe 9, ignition being effected by a spray or gas burner 3. The whirling and combustion of the fuel is assisted by additional air entering through tangential slots 12 in the burner lining 1 so as to envelop the burning mixture and, to prevent the flame from spreading, a further air current is discharged either radially inwards or slightly inclined forwardly through a slot 14 between the front of the lining 1 and a front piece 1a. The ignition and combustion of the mixture may be promoted by heating the secondary air to over 500‹ C. and preferably to 700‹ C. The primary mixture of coal dust and air may also be preheated nearly to the ignition temperature.
